While for many the incentive to lose weight is often aesthetic, to look and feel better (and there is nothing wrong with that may I add) losing weight has considerable health benefits that should not be neglected either. 

Health benefits of weight loss

Maintaining a healthy body weight is important for our overall well-being for so many reasons..
It reduces the risk of developing coronary heart diseases, having a stroke, developing type 2 diabetes, helps prevent certain types of cancers and it can also be incredibly beneficial if you have arthritis.

How weight loss can have a positive impact on Arthritis

Reduction in joint pressure - For every 1 lb of weight loss you lose studies show that 4 lbs of pressure is removed from your joints. 10 lbs loss equals a huge 40 lbs of joint pressure reduction.

Reduces inflammation - Weight loss can help reduce inflammation as adipose tissue (fat tissue) is in itself an active tissue that can create and release pro-inflammatory chemicals. A reduction in the body's adipose tissue will lead to overall body inflammation levels to drop.

Slows cartilage degeneration - A 2017 study published in Radiology assessed magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of Osteo-arthritic knees in 640 overweight or obese people, finding that those participants who lost weight showed significantly lower cartilage deterioration. The more weight lost, the lower the rate of disease progression. 

Reduces disease activity - Losing weight can reduce the overall severity of arthritis. A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Clinical Rheumatology reviewed records of 171 RA patients and found that those overweight or obese who lost at least 5 kgs ( 10.2 lbs ) of weight were three times more likely to have improved disease activity compared to those who did not lose any weight.
